Hi,

Great to see the forum up and running.

I'm currently in talks with a client about re-doing their website/SEO. They want to generate leads from their site, so I have put together a list of all the things I usually do, i.e article submission, PR, links, blog, social bookmarking, etc, etc.

The niche is finance related and they can make significant money from each lead. I quoted them $6000 for the site or a combination of some up money up front and a portion based on results.

I'm just wondering if I am under/over charging and should I hold out for a results oriented bonus? I have several sites top 3 for fairly generic keywords, so know I can deliver for them as well.

Matt, I find 'what to charge' the hardest aspect to work out. You've obviously factored everything in (and the project seems comprehensive)to cover yourself and if you're comfortable with the price, then see what they say. I tend to dwell on that too much - for hours sometimes - and there's nothing more annoying than putting a cost to a client and being told, "Gee, that's cheap!". IME you can always come down but can't go up. I know people can have really cheap SEO articles bought over the net but, honestly, I can't work out how the writers make any money on them. I ended up going for slightly less up front with a bonus. The client really wants to rank above his former employee and that factors in some extra for my good work.

I also found this a difficult task, knowing what to charge, even after researching the industry when I first began. I personally don't post my rates on my web site, as they fluctuate depending on the task, company involved, etc. I would much rather charge less, get the job, and build a relationship that way, than to overcharge and never hear from them again. When talking to a client, I ask what their budget is, so I have a greater understanding of what I can do for them within that range.
