If you're really serious about targeting a number of different keyword phrases, you're definitely better off having dedicated pages for each. Or at the very least, target a max of 2-3 keywords per page.

Having said that, with enough pages and enough links, scattering will probably work too. (But I suspect your subject matter lends itself to more rigid categorisation...)

It's a little difficult for anyone to tell how many links are really pointing to their site. I believe that most link checkers don't do much more than run a standard link search through each search engine (e.g. they search Google for "link:http://www.yourdomain.com"). This produces very inaccurate results. For instance, when I Google "link:http://www.divinewrite.com", Google reports only 83 backlinks.

The best backlink checker I've found is . It tells me I have 987 unique backlinks.

Another way to query backlinks is to Google your URL "www.yourdomain.com" in quotes. This returns all sites that include that string of text. In most cases, it's an active link. Note however that I think it reports more than there actually are. For instance, using this method, Google reports approx 18,500 pages that contain the text "www.divinewrite.com".

So the short answer is that I have somewhere between 83 and 18,500 backlinks!

I guess it is really at test of your copy writing skills and page layout. I have had similar experiences between the US and UK markets where many US words differ from the original english term e.g. colour / color. Invariably I end up optimizing two pages (not duplicate content) although this can depend on the content and structure of your pages.
